gemstone
Onyx is the second Birthstone of July.
Onyx is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color. Pure black onyx is familiar, and perhaps the most famous variety. It has a long history of use for hardstone carving and jewelry, where it is usually cut as a cabochon, or into beads, and is also used for intaglio or cameo engraved gems.
Onyx was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Carved onyx art objects were recovered at the Knossos archaeological site. Onyx was used in Egypt as early as the Second Dynasty to make bowls, perfume vessels and other items.
